The Pronunciation Issue

In Irish as in French the adjective usually comes after the noun

Roisin means Rose

Dubh means Black

Roisin isnt so difficult as many of us have known someone with the name.  For those who haven't it is pronounced "ro-sheen"  or  "raw-sheen".

The Irish word for black is more tricky.  It would usually be pronounced "dove" but in the Ulster dialect it would be "doo".

The city of Dublin gets its name from Dubh Linn meaning "black pool".  Dont ask me why the adjective is before the noun in this case!  So a more correct pronunciation for Dublin would be "Dovelin"  or North of the border I suppose it would be "Doolin"!
